FA Charges Mikel Arteta

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, has been charged by the Football Association (FA) over his heated comments after their 1-0 defeat by Newcastle United earlier this month.

“Mikel Arteta has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3.1 following comments that he made in media interviews after Arsenal’s English Premier League game against Newcastle on Saturday, 4 November,” reads a statement from the FA, which was shared with the media on Thursday, 16 November.

“It’s alleged that his comments constitute misconduct as they are insulting towards match officials and/or detrimental to the game and/or bring the game into disrepute,” the statement adds.

At the time of the incident, the 41-year-old manager vehemently claimed that the video assistant referee’s decision to allow Newcastle’s winning goal was “embarrassing” and a “disgrace”.

The Gunners released a statement the day after the match, backing up their leader and calling for “urgent” action from the Professional Game Match Officials Limited group (PGMOL), the body responsible for refereeing games in English professional football.

However, upon review, both PGMOL and the FA felt the goal should be allowed to stand.

Arteta will have until Tuesday, 21 November, to respond to the charges.
